Why do smoke alarms only last 10 years?
Переглядів 1,4 тис.Рік тому
The 10 year lifespan of a smoke alarm is a recommendation made by fire authorities because they are a life saving device. PSA alarms are designed to last well past the 10 year mark, but because the chances electronics failing increases as they age, 10 years is the decided time in which they should be replaced. Remember, Smoke alarms are a lifesaving device, you don't want to risk them not worki...

    The radioactivity from heavy plutonium (americium-241) ionisation smoke detectors are radiation headscalping people, and causing cataracts and brain tumours (and premature aging). Ionisation smoke detectors scalp heads and grossly degrade appearance. If you don't want to look inferior and ugly (and prematurely aged), then don't have an ionisation smoke detector in your home or office.

    Thank you for the video! Question: I have the LIF5000 so this would be a perfect replacement. Two of the LIF5000s are connected to the mains yet the other one is only operated via battery. Is it acceptable for the battery to power this device without having to connect it to the mains? Don't want to call over a tradie that's all as Mains power is not supplied to one of the devices.

    Info does not cover adding a 6000RL (with battery back up) to circuit. If the base is not mains connected, nothing happens when it is connected to the unit...🤔🤔🤔????

    • @PSAproducts
      @PSAproducts 11 місяців тому

      Hi Lloyd, This video covers the wireless setup process which is the same for the LIF6000 and LIF6000RL when connected to a wireless base. Since the Alarm powers the base, the wireless network doesn't require AC to function. If you do have any questions regarding the alarm you can call us at 1300 772 776 and we can answer any questions you have.

    • @PSAproducts
      @PSAproducts Рік тому

      Hi Bill, there is no smoke alarm that doesn't have some kind of battery backup. The alarm you have likely has a built-in non-replaceable 10-year lithium battery, you will most likely need to replace the alarm.

    Which is best for detecting electric vehicle fires? And can these be interconnected with the rest of the homes smoke alarm system?

    • @PSAproducts
      @PSAproducts Рік тому

      Hi RubLar, There haven't been specific tests done to confirm, however, it is more likely a smoke alarm will detect a fire faster than a heat alarm since in most cases smoke from a fire will the alarm before the heat will trigger a heat alarm. To answer your second question. Yes, all the Lifesaver smoke and heat alarms can be interconnected, however, they can only be interconnected with alarms of the same manufacturer.

  • @bringtheseo

    You'd think these things would be hard wired by now.

    • @PSAproducts
      @PSAproducts Рік тому

      Hi John, Most smoke alarms are hardwired now. All smoke alarms installed in new properties since 1997 should be hardwired in Australia. They need a backup battery because when there is a fire, there is a high risk the power will go out, either due to the fire itself or a short which caused the fire in the first place. If the smoke alarm is mains powered only and the power goes out during the fire, it won't sound.

    hi sorry for the random/stupid question.. im looking to install a heat alarm incase of fire.. would you happen to know how 'big' a fire would need to be in a room for the alarm to go off? I understand its around 53 degree C but unsure what this is in terms of size of fire (hard to answer depending on room etc i guess)

    • @PSAproducts
      @PSAproducts Рік тому

      Hi Rian, Unfortunately, this is a very complicated question, and we are unable to give you a definitive answer as there are many things that can affect the temperature of a fire, eg, what fuel is burning, how much oxygen is in the air, the size of the room and even the ambient temperature. Since it will take the air around the alarm to get to 57 degrees Celsius with the LIFHA240 there would need to be a good fire already burning in the room, and depending on the size and material in the room, that could engulf the room in a few short seconds. Ideally, and especially if there are people living within the space, use a smoke alarm for the quickest response since smoke is produced at the very early stages of a fire and usually as a fire is beginning to burn it will produce more smoke. Hopefully, this helps.

      Hi I am an informal fire protection consultant my answer to you would be maybe you mean how many heat alarm do you need in an area well the spacing for heat alarms is listed in the directions but some heat alarms will only activate if the temperature is heated above a certain temperature some may also have a rate of rise feature that if the temp raises to quiclkly it will activate I wish you good Luck !!!

    • @Fredengle
      @Fredengle Рік тому

      RIAN Some thing also to consider is that the reason photo electric use is increasing is because of its low rate of failure about 4% in both smoldering and flaming fire ion failures start at 20% and get higher heat alarms have approximately zero failure in most cases it's best to have both a photo alarm and a heat alarm what hopefully what isn't detect ed by one will be picked up by the other a heat alarm cannot detect smoke

    • @PSAproducts
      @PSAproducts Рік тому

      Hi Panjab, Depending on the make and model, there are two types of beeps an alarm could make: a full alarm or a chirp. The chirp is one little beep every 30 seconds or so (this will depend on the make and model). A full alarm means something is triggering the alarm as if there is smoke. This can either be caused by dust or insects or sometimes moisture. Otherwise, if it's a single blip every 30 seconds, the alarm needs a new battery. Though if this continues after a new battery is installed, it could be time to get a new one. I hope this helps :)
